NHL Trades Just Before The Deadline Analysis

Wednesday, March 5, 2014

Wednesday proved to be a very busy day in the National Hockey League with numerous big name players being traded. Possibly the most talked about trade was between the Tampa Bay Lightning and the New York Rangers. The Rangers acquired veteran forward and captain Martin St. Louis in exchange for captain Ryan Callahan, a 2014 conditional 2nd round draft pick, and a 2015 first round pick.

Ryan Callahan brings a youthful hardworking strong force to Tampa Bay along with draft picks for future talent. Martin St. Louis is a 38 year old veteran who continues to match the same high level of play as his younger years. St. Louis has the most career points from the 2009-10 season until now out of all the players in the NHL. Callahan's contract ending this summer and the fact that Callahan wanted at the very least a 6.25 million dollar per year deal presents Tampa Bay with some tough decisions to make this summer. Tampa Bay has a lot of young Restricted Free Agents to give new contracts in the summer, and Callahan just adds to it. The Rangers on the other hand actually saved about a million dollars in next year's salary cap by executing this trade with Martin St. Louis's contract at just about 5.6 million per year. Overall for the short-term, the Rangers have received the better half of the deal, but in the long-run, the Lightning will definitely benefit from this deal more than the Rangers. For the most part, this was a pretty even deal. Despite the Rangers loss, St. Louis had many chances with his Brad Richards and Carl Haglien. This line seemed to develop instant chemistry.

Another big trade, which waited for the last minute, was the Thomas Vanek deal. The Montreal Canadians got such a great deal for such a powerful forward in Vanek by only giving up forward Sebastian Collberg and a second round draft pick contingent on the Canadians getting into the playoffs this year. The Islanders definitely could have received more talent, but it was definitely better than giving up Vanek to the free agency in the summer.

Marian Gaborik was dealt to the Los Angles Kings. This deal will definitely help the Kings make a legitimate playoff run this season. Gaborik views this trade as a fresh start, which should be good for him because of all the injuries he suffered with the Blue Jackets.

The Buffalo Sabres continued to show that they are in the rebuilding stage by trading Matt Moulson and Cody McCormick to the Minnesota Wild in exchange for Torrey Mitchell and a 2nd round pick in both 2014 and 2016. Overall this trade is a win-win situation because the Wild are on the verge of making the playoffs and Moulson will only help and the Sabres will gain young talent to develop their team for years to come.
