Rangers Win In Game 7! A Look At The Entire Series

Sports

The Rangers just pulled off one of their biggest comebacks in Rangers history being down 3 games to 1, and winning the series 4-3. Here's a game-by-game breakdown of how they managed to pull this off.

GAME 1-
Rangers 3, Penguins 2 OT
Game one was a high paced matchup on both sides. The Rangers took the early lead with a goal by Benoit Pouilot, and another goal in the first period by veteran forward Brad Richards. The Penguins answered in the second period with 2 goals, one from Lee Stempniak and one from James Neal. After a scoreless third period of play, the game went into overtime. In OT, the Rangers scored three minutes into the game and actually scored again because the referees though the original goal hit the crossbar. Either way the Rangers took game 1. Although the Rangers were outshot in this game, it seemed that they played better overall.

GAME 2-
Penguins 3, Rangers 0
Game 2 in Pittsburgh was a one-sided game. The Penguins thoroughly outplayed the Rangers, leaving them scoreless at the end of three periods. Marc Andre Fleury actually played like a top notch goaltender in this game, which is rare. The Penguins scorers were Letang, Jokinen, and Malkin.

GAME 3-
Penguins 2, Rangers 0
The Penguins had another solid effort in game three, and they were assisted by the Rangers lack of scoring. The Rangers failed to convert on 35 shot attempts in the 6o minutes of play. Now in this game Fleury played decent, but the type of shots the Rangers were taking and their subpar accuracy made Fleury look a lot better than he played. Again, the Penguins shut out the Rangers, which means the Rangers have went six consecutive periods without scoring a goal. The Penguins were hoping for a similar effort in Game 4.

GAME 4-
Penguins 4, Rangers 2
In game 4, the Rangers had their worst playoff appearance of the year. Their slow pace combine with a lack of heart and effort is what ultimately helped the Penguins' win. The only good thing that happened for the Rangers in this game is after 7 scoreless periods, they finally found the back of the net. Otherwise, the game was a train wreck. The Penguins dominated play throughout the 60 minutes, and made it seem like the Rangers were getting knocked out in Game 5.

GAME 5-
Rangers 5, Penguins 1

Game 5 was an extremely emotional game due to the death of Martin St. Louis's mother the day before. St. Louis and his father decided that he should play because St. Louis's mother would have wanted him to play. With a ton of support from his teammates, family, friends, and fans, St. Louis played a great game and managed to lead the Rangers passed the Penguins. This was easily the best effort the Rangers have showed throughout the playoffs. The passing of France St Louis brought the Rangers players closer than ever before.

GAME 6
Rangers 3, Penguins 1
Another emotional game was played in game 6 for the Rangers and Martin St. Louis because of the fact that the game was being played on Mother's Day. St. Louis brought his father and a few family members to the game on this tough day. St. Louis scored the first goal of the game and scooped up the puck to give to his father. After this goal, the Garden was loud and the Rangers were playing top-notch hockey. Hagelin scored a few minutes after St. Louis, and the Rangers were on top the rest of the game. Facing elimination, the Rangers improved their record to 9-2 in the last 11.

GAME 7
Rangers 2, Penguins 1
The Rangers and Penguins both came out flying in game 7, knowing that the long series has come down to just one game. The Rangers got the early lead with a goal from the fourth line, Brian Boyle from Dominick Moore). This line had a ton of ice-time in the first period because of their high level of play. After the first, the score was 1-0, and the Penguins outshot the Rangers 10-7. In the second period, the Penguins answered relatively early with a goal by Jussi Jokinen, probably the Penguins best player in the playoffs. With a power play opportunity, the Rangers managed to score only their third power play goal in the past forty or so power play chances. Brad Richards recorded the goal, which was assisted by Martin St. Louis. The second and third period were dominated by Henrik Lundqvist. The Penguins outshot the Rangers 26-13 in these two periods and had a lot more chances. Overall, the Rangers were outplayed, but Lunqvist stood tall, and saved the Rangers from elimination.
